Giant-Landover is one of the leading supermarket brands in the Washington D.C. area and a committed partner to the communities it serves. The company operates 180 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs over 23,000 people.
Giant-Landover’s first store was opened in 1936 in Washington, D.C when founders N.M. Cohen and Samuel Lehrman introduced in the Washington area a new concept in food retailing – the supermarket. They reasoned that a large store that sold high volume of goods and operated on a self-services basis could afford to offer customers a wide variety of quality food at the lowest possible prices. The first Giant Food store was an instant hit and since that time the company has been an integral part of the local community, growing to serve the entire Baltimore/Washington and Delaware market areas and employing over 23,000 people today in 180 stores.
From its inception, Giant-Landover has been an innovator in the retail food industry. The company’s first stores played a significant role in bringing food prices down in the area and helped lead many developments in the supermarket industry. Among other milestones, in 1958 the company opened the first of its Super Giant stores, featuring 35 different departments including clothing, jewelry, hardware and appliances.
Giant customers were also the first in the United States to see nutritional labeling as part of the shelf price label, long before this information was required on packaging. In 1970, Giant hired the industry's first consumer advocate, who worked with government and industry experts to develop and test consumer programs, including unit pricing and nutrition labeling – a role still important in the company today.
In August 2008, Giant-Landover and its sister company Stop & Shop introduced a refreshed brand identity aimed at engaging their customers even more with a continued focus on quality, price, service and reliability. The company is achieving its objectives with the help of its Value Improvement Program, making improvements to its supply chain and refocusing its product assortment, allowing it to lower prices.
