Amsterdam, The Netherlands - Ahold today announced its nomination of Lodewijk Hijmans van den Bergh to the Corporate Executive Board as Chief Corporate Governance Counsel. He succeeds Peter Wakkie, whose decision to retire from Ahold was announced in June. Hijmans van den Bergh will join the company on December 1, 2009, and assume his responsibilities as acting member of the Corporate Executive Board and Chief Corporate Governance Counsel from that date.
Hijmans van den Bergh will be responsible for Ahold’s legal, corporate governance and compliance functions. He will also head up mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate responsibility.
Lodewijk Hijmans van den Bergh (1963), a Dutch national, is currently partner and member of the managing committee of Amsterdam-based law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, where he leads the corporate practice. Hijmans van den Bergh specializes in corporate and securities law, with a particular emphasis on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. He joined De Brauw in 1988, and was the firm’s resident partner in its London office from 1994 until 1998.
