$50,000 donation made to Central Virginia Food Bank to fight childhood hunger; $25,000 to local fire and police
Richmond, VA - May 17, 2010 – MARTIN’S today commemorated the opening of all 25 former Ukrop’s Super Markets under the MARTIN’S name with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Chesterfield Town Center store. Members of the MARTIN’S team, led by Rick Herring, president, GIANT/MARTIN’S, and Jim Scanlon, regional vice president, South Region, were joined by Bobby Ukrop, the former owner.
“Today marks five months to the day from when we announced the acquisition of Ukrop's by MARTIN’S on December 17, 2009” said Herring. “It took a tremendous behind-the-scenes effort to ensure a smooth transition including the hiring and training of 3,600 new associates who we warmly welcomed into the MARTIN’S family and the multi-million dollar refurbishment of stores. It also took a great partnership with Bobby Ukrop and all of his team,” continued Herring.
“Seeing the ‘Featuring Ukrop’s Kitchen and Bakery’ sign on the MARTIN’S stores is exciting and heartwarming,” said Bobby Ukrop, president of Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods. ”Knowing that the same associates in the same stores will be serving customers the same great-tasting and freshly-prepared kitchen and bakery items is a clear indication of how hard MARTIN’S has worked to build a bridge from the legacy of the Ukrop’s retail business to the future of MARTIN’S.”
“We want to thank our customers for their patience during the renovation process,” said Herring. “A big round of thanks to all of our associates - without them, this exceptional effort would not have been possible.”
