Ahold's operations in Portugal were established in 1992 - two hundred years after the first Jerónimo Martins store opened its doors - with the establishment of the Ahold-Jerónimo Martins joint venture. The joint-venture company (JMR), which runs Pingo Doce and Feira Nova operations, is owned by Jerónimo Martins Holding company SGPS, (51%), and by Ahold (49%). With more than 200 years of history, Jerónimo Martins operates in food distribution and in manufacturing (through a joint-venture with Unilever). In Portugal, the Group operates in food retail and wholesale formats, with the brands Pingo Doce in the supermarket sector, Feira Nova in the hypermarket sector and Recheio, leader as cash & carry operator. The Group's interests also include a Marketing and Distribution Services Company representing in Portugal international brands of fast moving food products and cosmetics, and also specialized retail businesses (Hussel, Ben&Jerry's, Subway and Olá). In Poland, the Group's operations include Biedronka the leader food retail chain in the country.

Ahold announces strategy for profitable growth
On Monday, November 6, 2006, as part of our strategy for profitable growth, we announced that we plan to divest our minority ownership position in Jerónimo Martins Retail.
