Ahold USA’s supermarket companies Giant- Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop are once again celebrating Black History month, beginning February 1 and continuing through the end of the month.
As part of a series of activities, the companies are giving away the booklet Profiles in Excellence, which recounts African American heritage by highlighting significant accomplishments and milestones achieved by African Americans. The 2008 edition of Profiles in Excellence celebrates the contributions of six African-Americans who have inspired and shaped American music. For centuries, African Americans have influenced the music scene from jazz and pop to spirituals and more. In addition to distribution throughout its stores, Giant Food, Giant Food Stores and Stop & Shop are also providing free copies of the educational booklet to local schools and community organizations.
Giant Food and Stop & Shop will also celebrate Black History Month and Martin Luther King Jr. Day by sponsoring their second an annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest that will be open to all students in grades 6 to 9. Stop & Shop’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest will invite students to address the question, “How can service to others make you great?” Each essay submission will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity and adherence to the essay topic.
In addition, four of Giant-Carlisle's Giant Food Stores will be participating throughout the month with special events and displays celebrating the heritage and achievements for Black Americans and this year’s theme of the African American Legacy of Music.
“Giant is proud to use our stores to promote diversity awareness through multicultural educational events that celebrate the rich heritage of our communities,” said Jeff Martin, executive vice president for sales and merchandising at Giant-Carlisle. “We recognize holidays and cultural heritage months with in-store activities and community events to deepen our collective understanding of different cultures, foods and backgrounds.”
