Ahold announced a series of changes in its European and US businesses to create a strong platform for future growth in November 2009.
The reorganization in both continents delineates the responsibility for running operations, supporting the operations, and business development. The changes will ensure a sharper focus on local customer needs, provide efficient and effective support functions in each continent, and a more robust approach to business development. The changes will further simplify and standardize processes and structure to ensure the company can integrate acquisitions more easily, as it pursues its strategy for profitable growth.
Lawrence Benjamin, the COO for Ahold USA and member of the Corporate Executive Board, continues to be responsible for all US operations and has appointed Carl Schlicker as CEO of four newly reorganized US Divisions - Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop Metro New York, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle.
Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop was established in 1914 and pioneered the superstore concept in New England in 1982. The company operates superstores and conventional supermarkets in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New England, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York.
Stop & Shop operates conventional supermarkets and 55,000-75,000 sq. ft. superstores, some of which include gas stations, full-service pharmacies and one-hour photo developing.
Giant-Landover
Giant-Landover operates retail stores selling food, pharmacy, health and beauty care items and general merchandise in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Giant-Landover and Peapod have teamed up to provide an internet-based home shopping and grocery delivery service under the brand name Peapod by Giant.
Giant-Carlisle
Giant-Carlisle stores operate under the name Giant Food Stores in Pennsylvania and under the name Martin's Food Markets in Maryland, Virginia, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Peapod
Peapod.com provides internet-based home shopping and grocery delivery as an integrated element of the Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover operating company, along with service to the metropolitan areas of Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Peapod has achieved over 7 million deliveries since its first delivery in 1990.
Martin's
Martin's is a part of the Giant-Carlisle operating company. Martin's Food Markets stores operate in Maryland, Virginia, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
